Home Garden is considered as an important source of food security and livelihoods as it supplies diversified vegetables, fruits, spices, meat, fish, fodders for animals and medicinal herbs; vitamins and other micro-nutrients, and provides ecosystem services and is also a source of income. In Nepal, home gardens occupy just 2-11% of the family land holding but supply about 60% of the families’ requirement for vegetables, fruits and spices. Therefore, its value is very high to small and marginal farmers specially children and women. The GoN has endorsed a multi-sector nutrition plan which has envisioned HG as one of the key strategies to reduce stunting rate from existing 41% to 28% by 2015. In light of aforesaid constraints and background, this HG related project seems to be highly relevant for intervention in the context of Nepal as a whole and in the cluster -2 districts in particular.
